On Juneteenth 2022, my community joined me in transforming my 50-foot fence with the bold and vibrant Progress Pride flag—a powerful stand against hate. The Pride Fence was born out of love in response to repeated hate crimes targeting LGBTQIA+ youth at the local middle school. That same month the Scripps Ranch Pride Council was created to promote and celebrate love and diversity. Within hours of launching our community on Facebook we had over 200 members, supporters of love and hope in just days—today we have over 450 members and growing. What began as Pride flags on a fence grew into a fully painted beacon of hope propelling an entire community movement against racism, homophobia, and hate of any kind. Even after being vandalized over 20 times—with everything from spray paint to eggs, soda, and even feces—the fence has been lovingly restored just as many times by our community, and us proving that love always wins. In recognition of this work, the City of San Diego issued a proclamation naming February 11th as Pride Fence Day, honoring it as a symbol of hope and perseverance for our community.
